Using Dictation In ChiroUp

ChiroUp’s Dictation feature lets you speak directly into any free-text field instead of typing. As you dictate, AI cleans up your words and removes corrections or filler to capture the intent of what you said, giving you a polished result ready to use in your notes.

Dictation can be used in any free-text field in ChiroUp, although it is especially useful when documenting SOAP notes.

Your ChiroUp EHR subscription includes 100 free minutes each month. For additional usage, upgrade your subscription to include Voice to Chart & Dictation, which grants access to a total 1,500 minutes per month.

🗣️ How is Dictation different from Voice to Chart?

Both features are included in your Voice to Chart & Dictation Subscription, and they both use AI to help reduce documentation time, but they work differently:

  • Dictation is AI-enhanced transcription. Speak clearly and say exactly what you want written in the free-text field. Dictation uses AI to clean up your wording, including removing filler words and correcting mid-sentence changes, but it does not summarize or interpret your dictation into a different format.
    • Example: You say “The patient reports pain in their, um, left, I mean right, shoulder." Dictation would transcribe “The patient reports pain in their right shoulder.”
  • Voice to Chart is AI-powered summarization. It listens to the patient encounter and identifies the relevant information to create a concise Subjective summary. You can speak naturally during the encounter without dictating exactly how you want the information to appear in the note.
    • Example: Voice to Chart listens to your conversation with the patient and composes a summary, filtering out non-clinical data, like this: “The patient reports their neck has been worse than normal recently, which they associate with getting sick and developing a sinus infection. They also report ongoing shoulder issues that are “always” present but deny anything new with the shoulder.”

🗣️ How do I use Dictation?

1. Click into any free-text field where you want to enter your documentation.

2. Use the keyboard shortcut to start Dictation:

  • Mac: Command + Shift + D
  • Windows: Control + Shift + D

Speak clearly and say exactly what you want written. Dictation will listen to your speech and use AI to clean up and transcribe it into the selected field.

Click Esc to end Dictation.

💡Pro Tip: Dictation is designed to transcribe what you say, not summarize it. For the best results, make sure your microphone is unobstructed and speak your documentation as you want it to appear in the note.

🗣️ Dictation Settings

Navigate to your Dication settings in User Settings > Dictation

🗣️ Start / stop dictation (keyboard shortcut):

You can customize your keyboard shortcut for Dictation! Click Set shortcut.

  • 💡Pro Tip: We recommend using a combination of keys, such as Control + Shift + D, rather than a single key, such as D, to activate Dictation and prevent accidentally turning it on when you don't intend to.

Click your desired shortcut keys on your keyboard.

You're new shortcut is set!

🗣️ Push to Talk

Set shortcut allows you to choose the keys you can press and hold to activate Dictation in any free-text field in ChiroUp. Dictation will run while you hold the keys and stop when you release them.

🗣️ Touch Screen Devices: On Screen Microphone

For touch screen devices, you can enable an on-screen microphone that allows you to activate Dictation without the need for keyboard shortcuts.

🗣️ A note on Usage:

Your Voice to Chart & Dictation subscription include 1,500 recording minutes. Minutes used with both Voice to Chart and Dictation will count towards your total minutes each month.

Security & Compliance

ChiroUp’s Dictation feature is designed with privacy and data security in mind. Voice Dictation converts user-initiated speech into text and does not passively monitor, record, or capture conversations when the feature is not activated.

Audio is temporarily processed through secure systems to generate text output. ChiroUp maintains appropriate safeguards and Business Associate Agreements (BAAs) with applicable third-party service providers involved in processing.

🔒 Rest Assured: Voice Dictation audio and transcription data are not used to train AI models. Users control when dictation begins and where the generated text is inserted.
