- Share credits
This article will walk you through:
- 🌟 Creating relationships between patients
- 🌟 Collecting one payment for multiple patients
- 🌟 Sharing credits between patients

- 🌟 How shared payments appear in reporting
🌟 Before payments can be shared between patients, a relationship must first be established between the two patient records.
How to create a relationship between patients
You can establish related patients in two locations:
General tab of Patient Record
1. Click Edit

2. Switch to the Relationships tab and click + Add Relationship

3. Select the related patient and indicate relationship type. Leave Shared Payment Methods toggled ON. Click Save.

From the Payment Screen:
1. Click + Add New Relationship

2. Select the related patient and indicate relationship type. Leave Shared Payment Methods toggled ON. Click Save.

🌟 Here’s how to pay multiple balances for related patients in a single payment:
If you click the Pay button on the appointment panel or purchase screen, the payment window will automatically select any outstanding balances for all related patients for that date of service.
In the example below, a total payment of $95 is collected, and ChiroUp applies it across both Andrew and Lindsey’s records.

You can view all outstanding balances for both patients by clicking on Show All Outstanding.

Then, you'll see all outstanding balances for each patient:

💡Pro Tip:
When you take payment by clicking +Payment in the patient's record > Transactions > Payments, ChiroUp will display all outstanding balances by default.
Check any balance you'd like collect at that time, and expand items for any related patient to take payment for their balances at that time, too!

Now, let's take a payment and look at how the payments are documented in each record!
Let’s collect a total of $95 for Andrew’s and Lindsey’s May 8 purchases. We recommend reviewing the Payment Summary when taking a single payment for multiple patients to ensure everything is applied exactly as intended.

After clicking Collect Payment, you'll see record of the payment in both patient's records.
Because we initiated payment from Andrew's record, Andrew is the ‘primary’ payor. When viewing the payment from Andrew's (primary) record, you'll see the total payment amount and where it was applied:

The payment will also be recorded in Lindsey’s record. However, since the payment was initiated from Andrew’s record, Lindsey’s account will only display the portion of the payment that applies to her own outstanding balances.

🌟 Here's how sharing credits works:
If a related patient has a credit (unapplied payment) on their account, you can apply that credit toward balances for any other related patient when taking a payment.
You'll see any available credit on the payment window:

Click to apply any existing credit.
If the credit belongs to the Primary (the patient whose record you initiated the payment from), ChiroUp will automatically apply the full selected balance as a credit.
In this example, we clicked the Pay button from Rachel's purchase, so Rachel is Primary.

If you are applying a credit that does not belong to the primary patient, ChiroUp will, by default, apply that credit only to the credit owner’s own outstanding balance. You can adjust the amount if you want to apply the credit toward balances for other related patients.
In this example, we clicked Pay from Gage's purchase. This means Gage is the primary. Because the credit actually belongs to Rachel, we'll just populate Rachel's balance. You can update this amount to apply Rachel's credit towards Gage's balance, too.

Now let’s apply Rachel’s credit to both her and Gage’s balances and see what that looks like recorded in their records.
Always review the Payment Summary when taking payment or applying credit for multiple patients at once to ensure details are entered accurately.

After applying the credit, the original payment (the payment that created the credit) in Rachel’s record will update to reflect the two purchases it was applied to, for both Rachel and Gage.

The payment will also be recorded in Gage's record. However, since the payment was originally made in Rachel's record, Gage's account will only display the portion of the payment that applies to his own outstanding balance.

🌟 Here's how to share saved payment methods:
If a patient has a credit card saved on file, that credit card can be used by any related patient.
When collecting a credit card payment, you can select which saved card you would like to use.
- If the patient whose record you are taking payment from already has a saved card, you can click that card to view other saved cards for the patient, as well as cards saved under related patients.

- If the patient whose record you are taking payment from does not have a card saved on file, click to select a saved card from a related patient.

🌟 Here's how shared payments appear in Reporting:
The Payment Collection report will display the full payment under the patient record where the payment was initiated.

The Posted Payments and Compensation Calculator reports will show the payments separately according to how they were posted (applied).
